RAVE REVIEW
Rave parties are in the news. A brief introduction to Raves.
With the recent raid of a Rave party in Mumbai speculations are rift as to rave parties occurring in Delhi and whereabouts. With the entire Rave culture brought suddenly into focus- an introduction to the concept will be necessary.
A Rave or rave party is a term used for dance parties, often all night bashes, where a particular kind of electronic music-Rave or Trance- is played, often accompanied by laser light shows and artificial fog. Although originally rave parties were just this- a kind of dance party, during the 1980’s the term Rave took on a whole different meaning- being used to describe a wild party frequented by junkies and drug peddlers.
Rave party frequenters use refined drugs, also called ‘club drugs’ such as MDMA ; LSD; cocaine; amphetamines like methadrine(speed) and dexadrine; and chemically modified drugs called ‘designer drugs’. The Rave culture was popularized by Rock stars and Pop musicians- all youth icons.
Rave parties today operate secretly due to the illegal drugs which are almost always distributed in its venue. Raves are put together by several individuals referred to as promoters. Promoters are usually not incorporated, they are just individuals-ravers or former ravers- who organize the Rave. Raves are never made open to the public. Instead information about a Rave is only got through a circle of associates who are usually informed by word of mouth, SMS or emails. Allegedly coded notices of upcoming Raves are also put up in social networking sites or published as classifieds. To gain entry to a Rave you have to be on the guest list or go with someone known in the circle.
Party goers ranging from 16 yrs of age to late thirties or early forties attend these bashes. Most often they are frequented by college students or young working people with disposable incomes. Depending upon the venue and the people attending, raves can cost from Rs 2,000 per head to Rs 25,000 or more. Anything available inside- such as alcohol or drugs- is paid for separately. The drugs commonly making the rounds are marijuana, LSD, smack, brown sugar, mushroom and ecstasy. Some high profile Raves often carry on for a number of days and usually take place in far flung places such as Rajasthan.
In Delhi raves are rumoured to take place not in the city centre but in the outskirts, particularly in the farmhouses in Mehrauli, Vasantkunj, Gurgaon, Noida, etc. With the Mumbai Rave bust, Delhi along with other metropolitan cities has been put on high alert for suspected Raves and drug rackets.
